Jarrell Middle School Señora Hodges Room 211 101 E. Ave. F Jarrell, TX 76537 512.746.4180 x 3211 ¡BIENVENIDOS A LA CLASE DE ESPAÑOL! This information must be kept as the first pages in the student’s Spanish journal Teaching Philosophy: In our global society, it is important to encourage and help each student to develop an understanding, appreciation, and respect for the human race and its diversity. As part of my methodology, the student will practice good manners and social skills necessary for amicable human relations that can be applied to different cultures. I also hope to contribute to the expansion of the student’s horizons beyond our borders and to prepare each one to participate equally in our 21st century community as a responsible global citizen. Every student has the ability to learn and I will help him/her achieve this to his/her fullest potential. I will share study skills and strategies that the student can transfer to other subjects. I do not expect perfection, but I expect every student to put forward their best effort. Course Goals: This class period has been reserved for the practice and acquisition of the Spanish language and for exploring its cultures through an intense study of the language. That being said, the class will be conducted at least 90% in the target language: by the end of the year, the student will be able to understand, read, write, and speak Spanish at an acceptable level. Everything we do in class and for homework is to accomplish these goals. The Spanish class is an academic content; but most importantly, it is a life skill. Objectives: Listening: Students are to demonstrate understanding of words and expressions in varied contexts in Spanish. Speaking: Students are expected to use Spanish effectively in daily classroom usage and in directed activities. English is used at Teacher’s discretion, not a student option. Reading: Students are to demonstrate reading comprehension of texts relative to the current vocabulary as well as reading for functional purposes. Writing: Students are expected to do daily writing, such as short sentences, fill-ins, as well as create original material such as dialogs. Student Expectations: Every student has the right to a learning environment in which s/he can learn to the best of his/her ability and each student has the responsibility to conduct him/herself in a way that contributes to the success of the learning experience. Every student will: · “Respect classmates, Respect the faculty and staff, and Respect yourself.” · Use time and materials wisely. · Have a positive attitude and put forth your best effort daily Materials: All materials are required and must be brought to class daily. · Interactive Journal-Composition book · dark blue or black ink pen/s and #2 pencils, highlighters Grading Scale: See JMS handbook Class Participation: The student will get out of the class what s/he puts into the class. Class participation begins when the student enters the room and ends when the teacher dismisses the class. All students are expected to use the Spanish language as much as possible and to actively participate in all class activities and will be graded on their efforts. Class participation includes a student’s willingness to participate, preparation for class, and attitude towards the class. Tardy Policy: The student will be considered late if s/he is not in the room within 10 minutes of the class start time. TIME MANAGEMENT: Restroom use: A student will take care of his/her ALL personal needs before school starts, between classes, at lunch, and after school dismissal. To encourage students to build time management skills and learn to schedule their visits to the restroom at appropriate times. If an emergency arises or due to the health condition of the student, the teacher will make exceptions on case by case basis. Chronic conditions will be notified to the nurse, parents, and teachers; accommodations will be made through the school nurse. Homework – Homework is a significant part of the student’s learning. It gives continuity to the learning process beyond the school site; sometimes serving as practice and others anticipating a new lesson. Homework will be assigned as needed. Studying and reviewing what was covered in class, and practicing Spanish are part of homework. Written assignments are expected to be turned in on time and of top quality (neat and legible). Assignments (except projects) will be graded on completeness, not necessarily accuracy. Written homework not turned in at the beginning of class is considered late. Late homework will be accepted the next day at 50% of its original value and 0% afterwards. The student will have the same number of days s/he was absent to make-up missed homework. Make-up work: The first day the student returns to class after an absence, s/he will be responsible for obtaining make-up work. It is the student’s responsibility to talk to the teacher after class to set an appointment to make up missed quizzes or tests. The student will have one week from the day s/he returns to make up missed assessments. They will be entered as missing until made up before the deadline. Classroom Operations: · Adhere to all school and classroom rules and expectations. · Properly head all papers with first and last name, the date in Spanish format, and the class period. Complete all assignments in blue/black ink or pencil on loose-leaf paper.
To begin the class · Enter the classroom quietly and sit at your assigned seat. · Begin working on the Warm-Up · If you are done before the allotted time, then study the vocabulary and review material from previous lessons To end the class · The teacher ends the class, not the bell · Leave your area neat and orderly · Exit the room quietly Choosing to follow the guidelines will have a positive impact on everyone, and your grade. When we work as a team, the entire class will attain its goal: to learn and ENJOY Spanish. Remember, choices have positive and negative consequences. You have been in school for at least 6-8 years, and are well aware and familiar with classroom and school rules. Please think about what you want to say or do and make wise choices. |
